Q: How do you switch out shifter knobs on a mini cooper withoout damaging it at all, whatsoever?
I have an 02 mini cooper and work at a BMW/MINI dealership but I don’t feel like paying or want to listen to anyones bs about buying a shifter knob from there yada yada yada. I have heard of just pulling but I want to make sure it doesn’t get damaged because we will be selling the car in a few months. I just need a smaller knob so I can fit my iPod fm transmitter more easily. When I go into first it hits my transmitter. Any pictures or details will be greatly appreciated.

A: If it’s like the shift knob on a BMW you just pull stright up

Q: can you bargan with the dealer for new mini cooper?
i’m trying to buy a new mini cooper but the dealer is pretty adamant about not budging on the listed MSRP. has anyone ever successfully bargained for a discount? does going thru the costco auto purchasing program give you any discounts?

A: those people that say you can bargain obviously haven’t tried it themselves. the mini cooper dealers will flat out tell you that they won’t bargain, and if you threaten to walk out or go to another dealership they’ll happily show you the door. they know that someone else will want to buy the car at list price, plus they also know that there’s not many mini dealers around, so if you really are going to visit another dealer, you might have to travel a few hundred miles or so.

keep in mind that a few years ago when mini coopers were very much in demand, some dealers were inflating their prices even further than MSRP!

Q: what is the lowest out of the door price you can get from a new mini cooper? 2006,07?
is the mini cooper a reliable car? does it need alot of maintanence. i want to get just the basic model, is it going to be a big difference with the turbo one?

A: 25,879 USD

Q: Can anyone give me the Pros and Cons of owning a Mini Cooper?
I have been eyeballing mini coopers for some time. I know I could just go online and search them but it seems those results are always unhelpful or based entirely on factory specs.

Im 5ft 5, so Im not concerned about head room.
Are they good when driving through rain, sleet, snow, ice etc.
Common repair problems?
New tires?

A: Mini are damn great cars. I dont care of its a chicks car, it takes a real man to drive that with pride.

Its seriously fun to drive. With a manual transmission, its basically an over sized go-cart on steroids.

Driving it is no problem whatsoever. Rain, snow…etc. But the only thing though is the repair. Unless you can do it yourself(having all the right tools and knowledge), it can get pretty expensive without warranty.

Q: Does anyone else have a rattling boot on rough roads on their mini cooper s?
Does anyone else have a rattling boot on rough roads on their mini cooper s? how do you go about fixing it, it only happens on rough roads, dual carrage ways and motorways are normally fine
Thanks

A: As above, first check for anything loose rattling around in there – make sure the spare wheel carrier is tight. It may be the boot lid slightly loose: there are rubber stops that you can screw in & out to give proper closure. You can also adjust the striker plate to achieve the same.

Q: Can the Mini Cooper dealer demand a down payment days after i sign the papers and drive off the lot?
Help! My girlfriend finally bought the Mini Cooper she had been dreaming of this last saturday and had her new car joy ruined today by the dealer asking for $2300 more!

A quick run down: Found the perfect Mini with all the options last friday night. She went back first thing Saturday morning and tried to make a deal. She got free floor mats:( paid sticker 25700, bought gap insurance, extended warranty & Lojack. Said she didnt want to go over 30k. Walk out just under 32K. $490 a month for 7 years!!

Today, South Bay Mini calls and says the bank didnt approve that amount and she must bring in $2300 or go to her CU.

Is this a joke?! Are there hidden cameras set up waiting to see my reaction?! Are they cheating, lying bastards that need to squeeze $2300 more out of her?

My question: Can they do this and if yes can we give them the car back and not face a cancellation fee, bad credit reference, etc?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance…..

A: Yes they can ask for more money down because they didn’t get a full call or all the money needed from the bank approval. On your contract there is a box that says “sellers right to cancel”. Basically that means the dealer has 10 days the get you approved as written on the contract or the contract can be voided and the car returned. So here are your options:

1) Take the car back-they don’t want to lose a sale so negotiate the price with them again. If she paid full sticker price then there is room to negotiate. Trust me they don’t want the car back.

2) Cancel the extended warranty and Lojack. Keep the Gap it is very important. You can purchase the warranty for cash before the car hits 12,000 miles. That is when the prices for warranty’s increase.

3) Have her go to her credit union if necessary. She may get a better interest rate anyway.

4) If you decide to give the car back there are NO ramifications towards her. She will get every penny back that she gave as a down payment and no harm will come to her credit history.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions. I assume that since you said South Bay Mini-then you live in So Cal? Let me know because I can try to help you.

Q: Where to do oil change for mini cooper besides the dealer?
any chain store? I know Pennzoid doesn’t do oil change for mini cooper anymore.

A: What? Really? The oil filter must be in a horrible place. For example in my car it’s right under the throttle body (drop in filter) and it’s a pain to get to…but even then a couple years back I took it to a chain to get it done and they didn’t whine about it. Then again…I was telling the tech what to do.

Maybe you should just suck it up and do it yourself?

Q: When did the MINI cooper clubman came out?
Last year? I wanna buy a used mini cooper clubman. How much do you think it runs now?

A: February 16th 2008 for US launch (first cars to customers).

November 2007 for the UK and most of Europe/rest of the World.

Q: What is a good exhaust system and short ram intake for a 2003 MINI COOPER S?

the short ram intake im Just looking for performance in horse power and that it looks cool

i would also like to hear some suggestions on other upgrades i could do to my mini cooper S like performance ships and othet stuuf

A: Borla or Milltek. The Borla is a bit louder. The Alta CAI is a great choice.

Q: mini cooper convertible -the wiper stick has a red light on it – why do some have yellow lights?
ok so i have a mini cooper convertible – the wiper stick (or whatever its called! ha! the stick on the right of the sterring wheel) has a red light on the end of it. Why do some mini’s have a yellow light on the end of them?

A: The red light on the wiper stalk is an indicator for how much washer fluid you have.

A red light on the turn indicator stalk is for the optional alarm system.

Q: Need help with meaning of yellow indicator light for 2004 Mini Cooper?
My 2004 Mini Cooper had an indicator light come on in the odometer. It is yellow with a circle and three black dashes on either side but nothing in the middle. I can not find what this indicator light means in the information I recieved with my car.

A: That is the brake pad wear indicator (see page 15-16 of your manual).

Odds are that you have worn away almost all of your brake pad material and it’s time for a brake job. On 2 of your wheels (one front, one back), you have a sensor in the brake pad (black wire) that is destroyed when the pads are worn down to a certain point. You now need brake pads and at least 1 (possibly 2) sensors. If you haven’t done the brakes before, you may be due for new rotors as well. A brake fluid flush as well.

I do this work on my ‘06 MCS regularly… it isn’t that hard to do. $100-200 will get you a good set of pads + $20 per sensor + $200 for rotors. Brake fluid is $20 or so. The dealership will probably charge you over $1000 for the work, but it is important that you get it done because you are probably down to 2-4 months of pad left before catestrophc brake failure.

Q: If I wanted to buy a good Mini Cooper for a cheap price how could i do that?
I know for a fact that i cant afford a new one, so I was thinking maybe just a used one? But I really don’t know much about purchasing cars and it would really suck to go out and buy my first car and just get ripped off. Anyone know a good place/site I can go to so I can look at some prices for Mini Coopers, or at least get some additional help on buying a car… My first car?

A: Shop car dealers in your area to try to find the car that you want, and then do your home work.

Q: What would happen if you put an engine from an F-350 into a mini cooper?
Now, this is merely hypothetical, and as far as I know it might not even be possible, but what would happen? That engine has enough oofta to move at least a ton or two, and mini coopers probably only weigh like 500 lbs.

A: Mini Coopers come in at over 2000 pounds. The modern ones anyway: the early sixties originals weighed about 1400.
IF you chose the gas engine over the diesel and IF you mounted it behind the driver in the rear hatch area you MIGHT got this to work, but it seems like an awful lot of time and trouble for a result that’s likely to disappoint.
I saw a Volkswagen beetle with a front mounted big block Chevy engine once, and a Honda CRX similarly equipped so these things can be done.

Q: Mini-Cooper needs servicing every how many miles?
My lexus needs it every 5,000 miles, but I am told there is a longer interval with the mini-cooper, is that correct. Also should mini coopers use premium gas instead of regular?

A: The average oil change intervals is about 10,000 miles.
Premium gas is preferred.

Q: How much is the 100,000km service for 2003 mini cooper? (Australia)?
Hi

anyone know how much it will cost for a mini cooper 100,000km service?
It’s a major /big one isn’t it? I’m planning to purchase a 2003 model with 98,000km on it, just wanting to know how much extra i will have to pour on top of the purchase price.

Thanks!

A: There are lots of MINI enthisiast sites. Try www.Northamericanmotoring.com, www.mini2.com, or search for others. Owners there will know.

Call a MINI dealership and ask – they will be able to tell you what service is required then. Also, there are some .pdf copies of owners manuals available on www.northamericanmotoring.com and other sites. The MINI website makes the .pdfs available to new owners. I don’t know whether you can just download a random one.

That said, the 2004 had a good deal of appearance upgrades, so the 2003 should cost a bit less. I’m not a big fan of the early car’s look, unless the aero kit is there to update it.
